Promoting animal welfare with AI-enabled behaviour tracking for a major Zoological Park
Need
A major zoological park wanted to revolutionise the way they provided care for their elephants, while still being able to increase productivity and coverage as the zoo expanded its operations. They needed a way to observe behaviours and provide timely alerts in case of emergencies (typically a very manual and labour intensive process), and thus wanted to reimagine what this process could look like for their zoologists.
Solution
The zoo uses Aicadium’s behaviour tracking computer vision solution, which employs an elephant behaviour model developed in collaboration with wildlife experts. The end-to-end solution uses VIVOTEK cameras and AWS Kinesis for streaming and real-time analysis of video feeds.
Impact
The elephant behaviour tracking engine enables new methods of tracking elephant health that was previously not captured by human observation. Real-time video feeds enable detection and alerts for keepers to intervene when elephants exhibit life-threatening behaviors. The solution generates significant cost savings in keeper resources and has fundamentally changed the nature of their work.
